And a Bottle of Rum (Revised & Updated)
Wayne Curtis $12.40 for paperback at time of publication

From the grog sailors drank on the high seas in the 1700s to the mojitos of Havana bar hoppers, spirits and cocktail columnist Wayne Curtis offers a history of rum and the Americas alike, revealing that the homely spirit once distilled from the industrial waste of the booming sugar trade has managed to infiltrate every stratum of New World society.

Curtis takes us from the taverns of the American colonies, where rum delivered both a cheap wallop and cash for the Revolution; to the plundering pirate ships off the coast of Central America; to the watering holes of pre-Castro Cuba; and to the kitsch-laden tiki bars of 1950s America. Here are sugar barons and their armies conquering the Caribbean, Paul Revere stopping for a nip during his famous ride, Prohibitionists marching against "demon rum," Hemingway fattening his liver with Havana daiquiris, and today's bartenders reviving old favorites like Planter's Punch.

In an age of microbrewed beer and single-malt whiskeys, rum—once the swill of the common man—has found its way into the tasting rooms of the most discriminating drinkers. Complete with cocktail recipes for would-be epicurean time-travelers, this is history at its most intoxicating.

The Dirty Guide to Wine: Following Flavor from Ground to Glass
Alice Feiring $16.96 for Flexi Bound book at time of publication

Still drinking Cabernet after that one bottle you liked five years ago? It can be overwhelming if not intimidating to branch out from your go-to grape, but everyone wants their next wine to be new and exciting. How to choose the right one?

Award-winning wine critic Alice Feiring presents an all-new way to look at the world of wine. While grape variety is important, a lot can be learned about wine by looking at the source: the ground in which it grows. A surprising amount of information about a wine’s flavor and composition can be gleaned from a region’s soil, and this guide makes it simple to find the wines you’ll love.

Featuring a foreword by Master Sommelier Pascaline Lepeltier, who contributed her vast knowledge throughout the book, The Dirty Guide to Wine organizes wines not by grape, not by region, not by New or Old World, but by soil. If you enjoy a Chardonnay from Burgundy, you might find the same winning qualities in a deep, red Rioja. Feiring also provides a clarifying account of the traditions and techniques of wine-tasting, demystifying the practice and introducing a whole new way to enjoy wine to sommeliers and novice drinkers alike.

Books
Natural Wine for the People
Alice Feiring $17.09 for hardcover at time of publication

A compact illustrated guide to the emerging and enormously popular category of natural wine, a style that focuses on minimal intervention, lack of additives, and organic and biodynamic growing methods.

Today, wine is more favored and consumed than it's ever been in the United States—and Millennials are leading the charge, drinking more wine than any other generation in history. Many have been pulled in by the tractor beam of natural wine—that is, organic or biodynamic wine made with nothing added, and nothing taken away—a movement that has completely rocked the wine industry in recent years. While all of the hippest restaurants and wine bars are touting their natural wine lists, and while more and more consumers are calling for natural wine by name, there is still a lot of confusion about what exactly natural wine is, where to find it, and how to enjoy it.

In Natural Wine for the People, James Beard Award-winner Alice Feiring sets the record straight, offering a pithy, accessible guide filled with easy definitions, tips and tricks for sourcing the best wines, whimsical illustrations, a definitive list to the must-know producers and bottlings, and an appendix with the best shops and restaurants specializing in natural wine across the country, making this the must-buy and must-gift wine book of the year.

Ålander Nordic Rum
Far North Spirits $41.99/750ml SRP at time of publication

Ålander (pronounced "OH-lan-der") is made in small batches from domestically sourced Demerara and Turbinado sugar. Far North Spirits uses whole bean spices commonly found in Scandinavian baking and infuse them by hand. No artificial color or flavors are added.

Showing a nose of allspice, nutmeg, clove and ginger snap cookies, Ålander is both complex and exceptionally focused, like angels dancing on the somewhat crowded head of a pin. It has background aromas of mocha, cardamom and butterscotch, that give way to root beer, vanilla and a touch of peppermint. All combined by a smooth texture with clean, crisply defined flavors, Ålander finishes with sweet notes of caramel and banana bread.

The northernmost distillery in the contiguous United States, Far North Spirits makes premium, heritage spirits inspired by Minnesota’s character and agricultural abundance. Located just 25 miles from the Canadian border, Far North is one of only a handful of estate distilleries nation-wide to also grow their own grains.

Owney's Rum
Owney's Rum $29.99/750ml SRP at time of publication

Owney’s is inspired by a rum-soaked time in America’s history—Prohibition! At the time, “rum runners” were known to smuggle in aged Caribbean rums and blend them with locally distilled spirits to extend precious reserves. This is Owney's modern (and legal!) interpretation of that practice, New York style.

Owney’s Rum is made by blending still-proof Distiller’s Reserve with filtered cask-strength Dominican rum. In addition to removing color, filtering helps temper some of the barrel notes from the aged rum, letting the Brooklyn distillate shine through. This proprietary rum blend is then brought to bottle proof with filtered NYC tap water.

Hendrick's Orbium Gin
Hendrick's Gin $42.99/750ml SRP at time of publication

Orbium is a reimagining of Hendrick's Gin by their Master Distiller, Lesley Gracie. Instilled with additional extracts of quinine, wormwood and lotus blossom, the result is an oddly exquisite gin that sits roundly on the palate, complementing our beloved cucumber and rose essences.

It is almost certainly not for everyone, nor available forever. Orbium is distilled in exceedingly small batches and has a finite window of existence.

Orbium contains the same distillates as Hendrick's Gin, however, the same remarkable mind that broke conventions by infusing gin with essences of cucumber and rose has now taken gin in an altogether new direction by infusing flavors that are traditionally associated with classic gin libations; quinine found in tonic (Gin & Tonic) and wormwood found in vermouth (Martini cocktail). But it is not yet quite Orbium.

The addition of Lotus Blossom exquisitely balances the overall flavor; but, the trinity of essences together create a complex gin with surprising brightness and a finish that is uncommonly long and perfect for the Martini-obsessed.

Orbium derives from the word 'orb', the plural of Orbis and the Latin for circle. It is inspired by Lesley's description of the liquid's journey. It represents the spherical round taste that Lesley refers to when describing the Hendrick's house style. It is beautifully presented in the same iconic apothecary style bottle that is now synonymous with Hendrick's albeit in a sumptuous dark blue, inspired by the key essence of Blue Lotus Blossom. It also features an 'all seeing eye' on the label as a continuous circle and a reference back to the liquid's rounded character.

Dogfish Head Dragons & YumYums
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery $13.99/12-pack/6-oz. SRP bottles at time of publication

An explosion of fruit in every sip, Dogfish Head Dragons & YumYums is an intensely tropical—yet subtlety bitter—pale ale brewed with a combination of dragon fruit, yumberry, passionfruit, pear juice and black carrot juice. Clocking in at 6.5% ABV and 25 IBU, Dragons & YumYums is a first-of-its-kind collaboration with American rock icons, The Flaming Lips.

A sensory enveloping experience at the intersection of creative beer paired with creative music, the energy of this union inspired Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne to use ingredients from the beer—dragon fruit and yumberries—as characters in two original songs, The Story of Yum Yum and Dragon and Pouring Beer in Your Ear…making this the first beer with its own theme song!

With dragon fruit and yumberry as the main elements, Wayne transformed them into storyful lyrics in the song like, “Yum Yum and Dragon went out for a drive, but Yum Yum doesn’t have any eyes… Yum Yum and Dragon, they’re happy they’re friends…”

The psychedelic influence of the label artwork, designed by Michael Hacker as part of Dogfish Head’s Off-Centered Art Series, was influenced by the legacy of the Flaming Lips and the culinary components in Dragons & YumYums shown through radiating lines, movement of fire, dancing lips, rainbows and bold pink colors.

14 Years Old is characterized by flavors of orange peel, smoke, sea salt, and honey that distinguish this full-bodied highland malt.

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey
Woodford Reserve $34.99/750ml SRP at time of publishing

Woodford Reserve is proud to announce the release of their newest permanent expression.

Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is based on historical recipes but influenced by the iconic core Woodford Reserve Bourbon brand.

Woodford Reserve Wheat is made with wheat as the dominant grain, with a mashbill of 52% wheat, followed by malt (21%), corn (18%) and rye (8%).

“After Prohibition, the federal government permitted four styles of American straight whiskey, each with a different majority grain—bourbon, rye, wheat and malt,” renowned Master Distiller Chris Morris said. “Woodford Reserve now has all four whiskeys as part of its permanent family of brands—Woodford Bourbon, Woodford Rye, Woodford Malt and now Woodford Wheat.”

Quick Notes

Nose: Aromatic spiced (cinnamon and cedar) and cooked fruit (apple, pear, banana) mingle with a delicate floral character sweetened with light vanilla bean and brown sugar notes

Palate: Spicy applesauce and toasted coconut notes enliven an earthy mint and cocoa nib mix

Finish: Dry, subtle cocoa nibs and lingering apple peel
