Roy Spence is Co-Founder and Chairman of GSD&M, a national and leading marketing communications and advertising company. He is also Co-Founder and CEO of The Purpose Institute, a consulting firm whose mission is to help people and organizations discover and live their purpose. Along with Haley Rushing, Spence co-authored the Wall Street Journal best-selling book, It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For: Why Every Extraordinary Business is Driven by Purpose.
According to Roy Spence a purpose statement is “a definitive statement about the difference an organization is trying to make in the world. It’s the reason why a company exists beyond making money.” He continued by stating that consumers should be behind everything that you do and help you to rediscover and articulate why you exists. You need to be willing and able to serve the connection between you and your guests.
It’s best to tell stories and layer the values that drive the ultimate purpose. “Without a purpose, there is no heartfelt motivation or inspiration to drive innovation in a constructive and meaningful way,” states Spence. He also stated that there are two things that every business should note weather in the hospitality industry or not. The first, not to make something up but to compliment what’s already there and, second, the role of advertising should be the icing.
