Celebrating Bourbon Heritage Month

Throughout September, Americans can officially celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month, honoring the famed spirit from Kentucky, whether it’s by sipping a bourbon-based beverage or attending a five-day festival. Doing so is something of a government-sanctioned event, since the U.S. Congress declared bourbon “America’s Native Spirit” in 1964 to celebrate the heritage and legacy of the bourbon industry.

The Kentucky Bourbon Festival (www.kybourbonfestival.com) this year will be held Sept. 15-20 in Bardstown, Ky., also known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. While at the 18th annual event, attendees can enjoy everything from historical tours and reenactments to educational sessions, musical entertainment and black-tie galas. Last year’s event attracted 55,000 people from 40 states and 14 countries around the world. One highlight of this year’s event will be imbibing the festival’s official drink: the Clementine Crush Old Fashioned, a cocktail involving strawberries, blackberries, orange and cherry purees, Clementine juice, Kentucky bourbon and more. Looking for something a bit simpler to try out this fall? According to a survey of 970 legal purchase-aged consumers by Beam Global Wine & Spirits and Clarus Research Group, Bourbon on the Rocks is the most popular bourbon-based drink. Of those who selected a cocktail of choice, 45 percent chose the rocks option, which included 52 percent of male respondents and 39 percent of females. Tied for second were the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned, each with 21 percent, and the Mint Julep followed with 13 percent of the vote.
