Bobby Heugel of Anvil Bar & Refuge Named a Semifinalist for the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards

February 17, 2011 Houston --The list of Restaurant, Chef and Spirits semifinalists for the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards, the nation’s most prestigious recognition program honoring professionals in the food and beverage industries, was announced today. Bobby Heugel, co-owner and the creative talent behind the cocktail program at Anvil Bar & Refuge, was named one of twenty semifinalists in the Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional category. At just 27 years of age, Heugel joins wine, beer and spirits luminaries like spirits author and teacher David Wondrich, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and Ron Cooper of Del Maguey Mezcals to vie for one of five finalist spots.

“It is an honor to be included in this talented group of men and women, some of whom I’ve followed since I first started bartending,” says Heugel. “Anvil was always intended to be a simple bar for Houstonians, not a national cocktail hotspot. So, it’s gratifying and surprising to receive this type of attention. Hopefully, we will see more cocktails bars built for their respective communities as I truly believe that this approach is key to the longevity of the movement.”

The list of finalists will be announced on March 21, 2011. For a complete list of Semifinalists, visit
