NEW ORLEANS, LA—April 1, 2010 – “Death in the South Pacific” by Washington bartender Evan Martin is the “official cocktail” of the 2010 annual culinary and cocktail festival, Tales of the Cocktail. Recipes poured in from New Zealand to Washington as over 150 bartenders worldwide punched it up to create a Tiki-inspired cocktail for the 8th annual festival. Evan Martin won first place with his drink featuring Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old Rum, Rhum Clement VSOP, Grand Marnier, Trader Tiki's Orgeat Syrup, Fee's Falernum, Fee’s Grenadine, and Cruzan Blackstrap Rum.
“This drink hits all the contest requirements on the nose: It creatively mixes multiple rums, sweeteners, and citrus to "tikify" the Planter's Punch template; it has a full-bodied, layered, but not overcomplicated flavor; and its garnish shows theatrical flair, cleverly referencing the drink name.” Said Jeff Berry, official cocktail competition judge and tiki expert.
Martin’s cocktail will be served throughout Tales of the Cocktail, July 21—25, and will be featured in the summer issues of Culinary Concierge and The Tasting Panel magazine, and on the CocktailTimes.com and DrinkBoy.com websites.
The second place cocktail is the “Once Upon a Time,” created by James Goggin. Peter Bogren, a local Palace Café bartender, wins third place with his cocktail “Peter’s Planter’s Punch.”
Tales of the Cocktail also collaborated with The Liquid Muse Virgin Mixology and Fre Alcohol Removed Wines to offer the festival’s third annual official non-alcoholic cocktail. The “Self-Imposed Prohibition Punch” will be the Tiki-inspired nonalcoholic cocktail of the 2010 festival, and will be served at signature events.
“Death in the South Pacific” and the “Self-Imposed Prohibition Punch” made their debut at the Tales of the Cocktail Native Spirits Preview Party on Wednesday, March 31, at “The Attic” at Lucy’s Retired Surfer Bar & Restaurant. Locals were given the first sips of the official cocktails of this year’s festival while they previewed the Spirited Dinner series, spirited seminars, and parties that are in store the summer’s most spirited event.

Death in the South Pacific
3/4 ounce Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old rum
3/4 ounce Rhum Clement VSOP rum
1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
1/3 ounce Trader Tiki's Orgeat Syrup
1/3 ounce Fee Brothers Falernum
3 dashes Absinthe
1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 ounce Fee Brothers Grenadine
1/2 ounce Cruzan Blackstrap rum
Add all ingredients except for the grenadine and Cruzan Blackstrap to a Zombie shell glass and fill with crushed ice. Swizzle the drink well to mix and frost the glass and then pour in grenadine. Overfill the glass with crushed ice and then pour in Cruzan Blackstrap.
Garnish: Take a bamboo skewer and put a brandied cherry through at the very top followed by 1 pineapple leaf (insert through the middle) and then cut off skin from 1 large orange slice and then cut the strips in half. Insert the ends through the skewer having them hang on opposite sides of each other. Then insert the straw through the loop in the bamboo skewer. It should look like a guy hanging off of the drink (cherry=head, pineapple leaf= arms, citrus peel dangling away from each other are the legs).
