Jasmine Beck, beverage director and partner at the Cocktail Club, brings 12 years experience in the hospitality industry as well as her creative palate and knack for client service to her new role at the Cocktail Club. Opening its doors in June 2011, the Cocktail Club presents a timeless selection of hand-crafted cocktails and libations in a classic, refined atmosphere. Beck researched and developed every drink on the menu down to the fresh garnishes grown atop the outdoor patio.
Beck joined the Indigo Road restaurant group, owners and operators of the Cocktail Club, in February 2010 as bartender and co-beverage director at Charleston’s award-winning Japanese sushi restaurant, O-Ku. There she developed unique cocktails, including the sugar and spice and lychee martinis. Her talent earned local acclaim in June 2010 when Beck won Charleston’s 2010 Bacardi Mojito Challenge with her passion fruit and habanero mojito, the Jasmanian Devil.
A native of Charleston, S.C., Beck moved to California when she was 17, and it was there that she developed her passion for the hospitality industry. After graduating from UCLA in 2008, Beck worked as a bartender in Santa Monica, Calif. at Tengu. In addition to serving craft cocktails at the Asian bistro and lounge, Beck acted as a marketing assistant to help coordinate special events at the restaurant and promote the company’s catering business. In 2009, Beck headed back East to Charleston, working as a bartender at O-Ku.
More than an occupation, bartending is a creative outlet for Beck, who channels her love of life, food, culture and travel into her unique concoctions. When she’s not practicing yoga or spending time on the beach with her dog, Shya, Beck enjoys taking time out to play with unique ingredients and flavor combinations in her effort to master the art of the perfect cocktail.
And it is at the Cocktail Club where Beck has the perfect venue to share her art. The 1,200 square foot rooftop terrace features an on-site garden (maintained by Beck and her staff) that provides drink ingredients for the Club. She has developed an extensive 11 page menu that celebrates the classic cocktail but also pushes it to new heights. Along with an abundant beer, wine and spirit selection, Beck has broken her specialty cocktail creations into numerous categories. The “Spice Up the Night” section – featuring “cocktails with heat” – includes an Oasis in Exile (house-infused Serrano gin, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, cucumber water and lime juice served over smoked salt and ice). One of the cocktails in the “Updated Classics” section is the Ode To Hemmingway, a daiquiri made with Myers Platinum Rum, Luxardo Maraschino, sugar, lime, fresh orange juice and blood orange bitters with a touch of house-made grenadine.
Beck truly exemplifies what a bartender can and should be, and her work at the Cocktail Club is the culmination and celebration of her experience, artistry and vision. From the ingredients she uses to the cocktails she creates, Beck is truly transforming and leading the bartending scene in Charleston.
