Sake to Me
Given the popularity of all things Asian today and a growing awareness of sake among patrons, many bar operators are eager to bring the Japanese spirit into their cocktail programs. Sake, however, is a delicate, almost evasive spirit; once introduced to a cocktail recipe, it can be easily lost in the mix. Two recipes by mixologist and cocktail consultant Ryan Magarian show sake to its best advantage.

Lychee G

1 ounce vodka
1 ounce sake
¼  ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
1 ½ ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
½ ounce Monin Lychee Syrup

Shake all ingredients, and serve up with a grapefruit disc and lychee nut as a pick.

Eastern Raspberry Sidecar

1 ounce Hennessy VS
1 ounce Nigori sake
1/2 ounce Cointreau
½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ ounce simple syrup
Chinese five spice sugar

In a pint mixing glass, add raspberries and hand press with muddler. Add spirits and mixers, fill glass with ice, and shake vigorously for six seconds. Strain into half Chinese five spice sugar-rimmed cocktail glass. Garnish with a raspberry on a pick.
