Scandal and Shakeup at Wynn Las Vegas
What a difference 24 hours makes. On Friday, Wynn Las Vegas announced the relationship between Wynn and nightlife impresario Victor Drai that spawned Tryst and then XS was ending. Drai would be free to “pursue a wide range of business opportunities,” according to Andrew Pascal, president of Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, who said their relationship had “come to an end on the best of terms, with the warmest possible feelings of both parties.” Claims of warm-and-fuzzy feelings aside, the word is that Wynn bought out Drai last week due in part to his work with Harrah’s on the revamp of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall, where Drai’s Afterhours resides; Drai is not allowed to poach any Wynn employees for two years — which, as the Las Vegas Review-Journalreports, is exactly when Drai’s new project with Harrah’s is set to open.
Where did that split leave wonder-twins Cy and JesseWaits, each a managing partner at XS and Tryst? The Wynn statement went on to assert that “Jesse and Cy Waits, who have run Tryst and XS for Victor Drai, will remain along with the men and women that have worked in the clubs since their inception so that these operations will enjoy complete management continuity.”
But on that evening, Cy Waits was pulled over when a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer reportedly caught whiffs of marijuana smoke coming from the SUV Waits was driving. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (his girlfriend, Paris Hilton, was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of cocaine).
Wynn, which is said to have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to management personnel having run-ins with police that result in arrests, cut Cy loose officially on Wednesday, although unverified reports had the firing came much earlier. A formal announcement from the company stated he is “separated from the company and is free to pursue other interests.” Hilton is reportedly banned from the Wynn properties.
What’s next for Cy Waits? A court date in late November, for one thing. Also, some observers speculate brother Jesse may be next out Wynn’s gilded doors. Where would that leave two of the largest-grossing nightclubs in the U.S.? Where might the brothers land? Insiders say not in a competitive nightlife venue for at least two years... Stay tuned.
