Around the Scene: Nov. 23, 2011
Eater.com handed out its 2011 Awards last week, with a few notable clubs taking some honors. Boom Boom Room won for Best NYC Bathroom, but lost in the Toughest Door of the Year category. Edging out BBR — as well as Provocateur, Westway, PH-D and Cabin Down Below — was The Electric Room. Considering the door girl once told a ragtag group of hipsters, “Well, if you were here last night, then you’ve seen it and you don’t need to come back,” that’s a well-deserved title if ever there was one.
Changes are underway at the Wynn in Las Vegas. Sean Christie is set to open a new nightclub called Climax, right after the Tower Suites’ lobby is revamped and launched. Meanwhile, co-owner and managing partner Jesse Waits’ Tryst and XS clubs are slated for renovations — physically for Tryst, while the shutting of nearby stores means XS will have a better place for the massive lines of revelers to wait before they enter.
Filed under “deals everyone’s heard about forever, but finally just actually happened,” The Morgans Hotel Group Co. has agreed to purchase a 90% controlling interest in The Light Group. The Las Vegas based Light Group has management contracts with MGM, including nightclubs, such as The Bank Nightclub at Bellagio Hotel and Casino and Haze at ARIA Resort and Casino at CityCenter; restaurants, such as Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge at Bellagio Hotel and Casino; and more pool lounges and bars. Morgans thinks the acquisition will allow it “to recapture third-party management fees and revitalize food and beverage operations at other existing and future properties and help grow its portfolio with new management contracts,” per their issued statement. The total price of the deal is about $47 million.
Pacha NYC is celebrating Thanksgiving with nightly events from Nov. 23-26. Native New Yorker DJs Erick Morillo and Danny Tenaglia will hit the booth together for one of the only times in history and Victor Calderone will present a special event on Thanksgiving Eve. International superstar Chuckie will be joined by special guest sister act Nervo on Thanksgiving night. AN21 and Max Vangeli are establishing themselves as a dynamic duo on Nov. 25, and Iberian duo Chus and Ceballos will help patrons dance off their Thanksgiving feast on Nov. 26.
The Palms Casino Resort and 9 Group will toast to 2012 with a selection of entertainment throughout all venues on New Year’s Eve. Revelers can ring in the new year at the Palms’ premier nightclubs, dance to the beats of Paul Oakenfold, DJ M!KEATTACK and Mark Stylz, mix and mingle among Playboy Playmates and enjoy an official John Legend after-party at Moon.
