The Wonders of Whiskey

Whether served neat, on the rocks or mixed with bitters, whiskey’s sweet and smoky taste can enhance any cocktail. It’s not just the traditional cocktails that hearten the flavors of this spirit, therefore having a few creative cocktails on your menu can make the blandest winter nights lively. So, we’ve got you covered with some wonderful whiskey drinks.

 

Tommy Gun

2 thin fresh ginger slices
1 teaspoon apricot jam
1/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
Ice
2 ounces Irish whiskey
1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
1 lemon twist

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the ginger with the jam and lemon juice. Add ice and the whiskey and Grand Marnier; shake well. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with the lemon twist.


American Whiskey Punch

1 cup sugar
2 lemons, juiced, peels reserved
16 ounces George Washington Rye Whiskey
4 cups water

Muddle the sugar and lemon peels. Add the lemon juice and 1 cup water to sugar mixture, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add the whiskey and remaining water. Transfer to a large punch bowl filled with ice. Garnish with lemon wheels, if desired. Makes one bowl of punch (about 6-8 cups)


Blended Peach Whiskey Sour

2 cups ice
4 oz bourbon
1 lemon, skin cut off, quartered
1 cup peaches (you can also substitute frozen, defrosted peaches if fresh are not available)
1 1/2 oz simple syrup
2 - 3 bar spoons apricot jam

In the blender cup of The Quiet One blender by VitaMix, add the ice, bourbon, lemon, peaches, simple syrup and apricot jam. Blend on setting #4, consistency should be smooth and creamy. Pour into 2 small daiquiri or large fun glasses. Garnish with fresh peach or edible flowers chilled glasses.


The Manhattan Cocktail

Half a tumbler of cracked ice
2 dashes (½ teaspoon) of gum syrup
2 dashes of bitters
1 dash of absinthe
2/3 drink (2 ounces) of whiskey
1/3 drink (1 ounce) of vino vermouth
(A little (1/4 teaspoon) maraschino may be added)

Combine all ingredients into tumbler, stir well, strain and serve.


Sparkling Raspberry Vanilla Dreamsicle

1 1/2 oz Vanilla Vodka
4 oz Black Raspberry Sparkling ICE

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with fresh berries.

 


1792 Kentucky White Dog Julep

2 tsp Sugar
.5 oz Water
6 to 8 Fresh mint leaves
2 to 3 oz Unaged corn or rye whiskey (AKA white dog or moonshine)
Garnish: Mint sprigs and a straw
Glass: Highball

Add the sugar and water to a highball glass and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the mint leaves and press lightly with a muddler. Pack the glass with finely cracked ice (wrap cubes in a towel and bash the bejeezus out of them with something hard and heavy) and then add the whiskey. Stir, add more ice to make up for any shrinkage and garnish with two or three sprigs of mint and a straw.


Some Like It Hot

1.5 ounces Wild Turkey Rye
0.5 ounce Aperol
0.5 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
2 barspoons freshly squeezed orange juice
2 dashes Fee Bros Whiskey Barrel bitters
1 dash Cholula hot sauce
Garnish: orange twist

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add rye, Aperol, Yellow Chartreuse, orange juice, bitters, and hot sauce. Shake for 15 seconds, then strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass. Garnish with orange twist.


Devil's Crusta

1 1/2 part Jim Beam® Devil's Cut Bourbon  
1/2 part Maraschino liqueur  
3 part fresh sour dash of Angostura Bitters  
1/2 part Simple Syrup

Shake all ingredients with ice until well blended. Strain into a chilled sugar rimmed cocktail glass.  Garnish with a wheel on the rim.


Hot Honey

1.5 ounces Western Whiskey Honey Pepper
0.5 ounce Aperol
0.5 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
2 barspoons freshly squeezed orange juice
1 dash Cholula hot sauce
orange twist for garnish

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add Western Whiskey, Aperol, Yellow Chartreuse, orange juice, bitters, and hot sauce. Shake for 15 seconds, then strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass. Garnish with orange twist.


Crown Royal New Fashioned

1 oz. Crown Royal
.25 oz. Simple Syrup
.5 oz. Almond Liqueur
1-3 dashes Bitters

Stir the ingredients in a shaker of ice and strain it into a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
