The Hop & Vine Goes International

At The Hop & Vine in Portland, Ore., pairing liquor with beer makes the beer bar’s new promotion — the Kopstootje Happy Hour — unique.

The establishment is helping Portland’s own Upright Brewing launch Kopstootje, a beer specifically created to pair with Dutch spirit Bols Genever. For $6, guests receive a 1¼-ounce shot of Bols Genever and a 10-ounce pour of the Kopstootje. The beer is made with the same kinds of herbs found in Bols, helping Americans warm up to the century-old Dutch tradition of chasing a shot of genever with a beer.

“This event works well at The Hop & Vine because our clientele have become savvy imbibers, and this event adds to their knowledge,” Owner Yetta Vorobik explains. “Both of these brands have become extremely prevalent throughout the community.”

So far, it’s been a raving success.

“We tapped our first keg a month ago,” Vorobik says. “It was empty within a day.”
