2010 Valley of the Moon Unoaked Chardonnay Displays Cool Climate Personality

May 3, 2011

SONOMA VALLEY, CA – Just as grape variety dictates the character of a wine, vineyard and vintage dictate its personality. The just-released 2010 Valley of the Moon Winery Unoaked Chardonnay illustrates the influence of vineyard and vintage convincingly. A product of the very cool Russian River Valley appellation and the unusually cool 2010 vintage, it showcases cool climate personality in impressive – and uncommonly appealing – style.

2010 Valley of the Moon Unoaked Chardonnay

Russian River Valley ranks among California’s coolest grape growing regions. Marine influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean produces strong afternoon winds and frequent overnight and early morning fog that cool the region’s vineyards during summer and autumn, resulting in a long growing season that enhances the intrinsic character of Chardonnay – which, like Pinot Noir, loves cold climate – even as it preserves the grapes’ natural acidity. The 2010 growing season proved to be among the coolest in 50 years and produced Chardonnay with exceptionally powerful fruit and extraordinarily high acidity. True to its name, the 2010 Valley of the Moon Unoaked Chardonnay was cold-fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel tanks to achieve pure fruit expression. However, 20% of the young wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance mouthfeel and temper acidity in the final blend.

Fresh, forward aromas of orange blossom, tangerine, lime and mineral provide an enchanting introduction to the 2010 Valley of the Moon Unoaked Chardonnay. Vibrant lime, green apple and kiwi fruit flavors are accented by subtle mineral accents. Mouthfilling yet nimble on the palate, this wonderfully food-friendly Chardonnay stays fresh and vivacious through the long, crisp finish. The 2010 Valley of the Moon Winery Unoaked Chardonnay is available nationally at a suggested retail of $14. A total of 3,660 cases were produced.

Valley of the Moon Winery welcomes visitors daily to its historic cellar in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. In addition to Chardonnay, the winery produces Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, Zinfandel, Rosato di Sangiovese and Cuvée de la Luna, a proprietary Bordeaux-inspired blend.
