2008 Valley of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon Demonstrates the Art of BalanceFebruary 22, 2011
SONOMA VALLEY, CA, February 18, 2011– In wine, balance can be the difference between good and great. Achieving balance in fruit, complexity, structure and acidity takes both quality grapes and deft winemaking. The just-released 2008 Valley of the Moon Winery Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon demonstrates the art of balance with classic character and appealing style.
Grapes for the 2008 Valley of the Moon Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon came from three top Sonoma County appellations. The largest component – almost half – came from Sonoma Valley, which contributed impressive fruit and depth. Roughly 30% came from Alexander Valley, which delivered polished texture, and earth and herb nuances. The remaining 25% came from Dry Creek Valley, which imparted structure and acidity. To complete the balancing act, Winemaker Greg Winter fermented the vineyard lots separately in stainless steel, aged the young wines in small French, Hungarian and American oak barrels for 22 months to gain complexity and included a small percentage of Merlot in the final blend to enhance richness and smoothness.
The 2008 Valley of the Moon Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon’s generous aromas of black currant, bittersweet chocolate, cedar and herbs evolve intriguingly in the glass, revealing different facets over time. Concentrated flavors of black currant and French plum are accented by subtle notes of anise and black pepper. Mouthfilling yet elegant, the palate shows superb balance that extends through the long finish. While already drinking well, soft integrated tannins promise additional finesse and complexity with cellaring. A generous 5,500 cases of the 2008 Valley of the Moon Winery Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon were produced. It is available nationally at a suggested retail of $18.
