SONOMA VALLEY, CA – For Valley of the Moon Winery, every new vintage of Cuvée de la Luna represents a new opportunity to create an exceptional, one-of-a-kind Bordeaux-inspired blend. Ironically, challenging vintages often produce the most impressive bottlings of Cuvée de la Luna and the newly released 2008 Valley of the Moon Cuvée de la Luna aptly illustrates this paradox. The product of a challenging growing season, it showcases exquisite fruit, complexity and – above all – finesse.
A combination of factors early in the 2008 growing season – including an extremely early bud break, record-breaking spring frost and strong winds during flowering – seriously reduced the size of the grape crop in Sonoma County. However, a mild summer and early autumn, interrupted only by a brief heat wave in late August, enabled Cabernet Sauvignon and its associated grape varieties to achieve impressive character and moderate structure at maturity. To take advantage of the vintage’s distinctive attributes, Valley of the Moon aged the Cuvée de la Luna component wines in small French, Hungarian and American oak barrels for 24 months and – after extensive trials – settled on a slightly atypical blend; 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Malbec. Despite the large Cabernet Sauvignon component, this vintage of Cuvée de La Luna offers richness and sophistication in a surprisingly approachable style.
The nose of the 2008 Valley of the Moon Cuvée de la Luna seamlessly melds black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit with bay leaf, nutmeg and tobacco complexity. Bold blackberry and raspberry flavors are accented by herb and earth notes, plus a hint of black pepper. Smooth and supple on the palate, with ample “soft” tannins that suggest additional evolution with cellaring, this delicious red stays graceful through the long, balanced finish. Due to the unusually small harvest, just 1,500 cases of 2008 Valley of the Moon Winery Cuvée de la Luna were produced. It is available nationally at a suggested retail of $30.
Valley of the Moon Winery welcomes visitors daily to its historic cellar in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. In addition to Cuvée de la Luna, the winery produces Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Rosato di Sangiovese.
