The 2010 Valley of the Moon Carneros Pinot Noir Reflects Multiple Influences
ONOMA VALLEY, CA – Wine may be the most “transparent” product on earth as every aspect of its production is reflected in the glass. A powerful, complex wine in particular showcases multiple influences – some obvious, others subtle. The just-released 2010 Valley of the Moon Winery Carneros Pinot Noir is such a wine, with a youthful yet pleasing personality born from a unique combination of vintage, vineyard and winemaking.
The 2010 growing season in Sonoma County’s cool Carneros region was even cooler than normal until late August, when a brief heat wave, followed by four weeks of perfect weather, brought Pinot Noir grapes to full maturity. Planted to a range of Pinot Noir clones, a single vineyard in the heart of the region yielded deeply fruited, superbly balanced grapes that became the primary component of the 2010 Valley of the Moon Carneros Pinot Noir. Following 10 months of aging in small French and eastern European oak barrels to enhance complexity, a Carneros blend was assembled from the various clones and then augmented with a small amount of Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley (6%) to broaden the fruit palette. A small Syrah component (6%) also was included in the blend to enhance depth and structure in the finished wine.
Deep brick color heralds the 2010 Valley of the Moon Carneros Pinot Noir’s bold style. Intense aromas of red cherry and pomegranate are accented by generous licorice and earth complexity. Focused red cherry and raspberry flavors provide a solid foundation for notes of vanilla, spice and smoke. Solid structure and ample acidity contribute to a long, polished finished. Accessible now, this young, extroverted Pinot Noir promises additional elegance with a year or two of cellaring. Approximately 5,600 cases of the 2010 Valley of the Moon Winery Carneros Pinot Noir were produced and it is available nationally at a suggested retail of $18.
Valley of the Moon Winery hosts visitors daily at its historic cellar in the Sonoma Valley. In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery produces Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Rosato di Sangiovese and Cuvée de la Luna, a Bordeaux-inspired blend.
