SMH.com.au: When Irish Beers Eye the Foster's Exit

FOSTER'S has lost two more beer brands to rivals in the wake of last year's $12.3 billion takeover by global brewer SABMiller.

Production of Irish labels Guinness and Kilkenny have jumped camps to Lion.

In March, Mexican brewer Modelo took its Corona beer away from Foster's because of the change of ownership, handing the popular import to Lion.

In the past year, the SABMiller takeover of Foster's has seen other labels exit the Foster's camp, with the family-owned Coopers Brewery winning a distribution deal with the world's fourth-largest brewer and former Foster's partner Carlsberg.

Yesterday's announcement of the departure of Guinness and Kilkenny marks the fifth and sixth imported beer brands to leave the Foster's portfolio, although unlike the loss of Corona, Foster's only manufactured Guinness and Kilkenny and did not handle the beers' distribution, marketing or sales.

Some brewers have become uncomfortable with their labels being distributed by SABMiller in Australia and have chosen new partners such as Lion or Coopers. Foster's has also lost its Stella Artois brand to Lion.
