MarkeTeam’s Jason Stone is First Beverage Agency Exec to Earn Certified Cicerone Status for Proven Beer Knowledge and Expertise

MarkeTeam Inc. announced that its Director of Premier Accounts, Jason Stone, has passed the Certified Cicerone examination for proven beer knowledge and expertise. Stone is the first beverage agency executive to be awarded the advanced certification, typically earned by beer industry professionals. The Cicerone Certification Program provides independent assessment and certification and denotes the skill level of beer professionals and enthusiasts. The program has become the industry standard for identifying professionals with demonstrated abilities in beer history, selection, sales and service and the first attempt pass rate for the Certified Cicerone exam is only about 35-40%.

“We are very proud that Jason, who is already a level one Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, passed the Certified Cicerone exam on his very first attempt,” said Glenn Schmitt, president of MarkeTeam. “Jason is also the first beverage agency professional to achieve this distinction. After nearly a year of preparation and study, Stone earned the certification through a series of examinations culminating with an intense taste test plus three hours of written and oral questioning. The written, oral and tasting portions of the exam include beer serving and storage protocols, beer styles, ingredients and brewing processes, beer flavor and evaluation, and food pairings. Stone scored a 95% in the beer flavor and evaluation portion of the exam which includes written questions plus taste testing for off-flavor identification, style discrimination and beer acceptance.

Founded in 2007, the Cicerone Certification Program tests and certifies beer expertise similar to the wine world’s Sommelier program. A Certified Cicerone possesses deep and well-rounded knowledge of beer and beer service as well as competence in assessing beer quality and identity by taste. A grade of 80% overall and at least 70% on the tasting portion of the exam are required to pass.
