Jazz Bistro a Welcome Addition to Toronto’s Entertainment SceneApril 11, 2013
The old “Top O’ The Senator”, one of the shining lights of the Toronto jazz scene in the 70’s and 80’s, but shuttered for the past eight years, has been newly transformed into a sleek jazz supper club that exudes chic sophistication and style. The recently opened Jazz Bistro on Victoria Street is a vibrant and hip addition to the surrounding downtown theatre area, which already includes Massey Hall, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, the Ed Mirvish Theatre, and Yonge-Dundas Square - Toronto’s version of New York’s Time Square.
Designed by Hirschberg Design Group Inc (HDG) of Toronto, the new jazz club’s use of space is precise and well-appointed. The furnishings and décor are contemporary and classy, and the colour scheme of a gold motif with black and red accents and rich wood tones creates a warm, inviting atmosphere for both dining and live music. The urbane style is carried throughout the multi-level club, including a cool and sexy bar at the entrance: the perfect gathering spot for friends and conversation.
On the main floor, front and centre, is a large stage framed with red velvet drapery and highlighted with a one-of-a-kind grand piano with a bright red lid. A red crystal grand opera chandelier hangs above the stage, and a large Jazz Bistro sign with a red halo effect mounted on the wall behind the stage adds a subtle yet characteristic feature.
Theatrical lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system create a sense of excitement and drama, and while the open area above the stage enables it to be viewed from two levels of seating, the multiple video cameras and well-positioned large screens also ensure that every patron can enjoy the musical entertainment.
Joan and Colin Hunter, the owners, had a dedicated vision to bring jazz back to Toronto in a supper club environment, and are understandably enthusiastic about their exciting new venture. HDG is very proud to have helped make this vision a reality. We invite jazz lovers to come in and enjoy the music, the food, and the décor at the Jazz Bistro!
