Shakers, spirits and syrups were in full swing Saturday night during the Original Cocktail Competition at the inaugural San Antonio Cocktail Conference.
The event attracted more than 150 people to watch 32 amateur and pro contestants from across the country in the vacant spot adjacent to Bohanan's Restaurant and Bar downtown.
Local “spiritual” enthusiast Roy Galvan, who works for CPS Energy, brought his own signage and cheering section. He entered his secret Chachita recipe that he named after his wife.
“A couple of years ago, I made a drink during the summer that was airy, delightful, not too heavy. I named it after my wife, because when she was a child, her mom would call her Chachi, short for chachita,” he said, explaining that the term means rambunctious and mischievous little one.
The blind panel of judges evaluated cocktails on taste, presentation and technique.
John Lermayer from the Florida Room in Miami won the $2,500 first prize with his Have a Heart, a variation of a daiquiri that he finished with Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters and nutmeg.
