In addition to fundraisers in bars around the country, beverage companies and hospitality organizations are helping out the Gulf Coast region devastated by the oil spill with fundraising and relief efforts.
As part of Abita’s SOS – A Charitable Fund, a national fundraising effort that assists those individuals and the environment affected by the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the company released a new beer, Abita SOS – A Charitable Pilsner. With each beer sold in the 41 states Abita is available, 75 cents will go to charity. The 22-ounce beer features images of pelicans, fish, shrimp and fishing boats unique to the Gulf of Mexico region arranged to form the international distress symbol, SOS. Merchandise, including hats, shirts, pins, decals and car magnets, also is available, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the SOS Fund. On the spirits front, DonQ Rum sponsored the inaugural Louisiana Coastal Rehab Benefit at Tipitina’s French Quarter on July 22 in New Orleans, coinciding with Tales of the Cocktail. The benefit included performances by New Orleans’ own Cowboy Mouth and an appearance by Rebirth Brass Band. All proceeds from the $10 cover and $4 drinks went to The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, which helps families affected by the oil spill.
Additionally at Tales of the Cocktail, the New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society sold a limited edition bar towel that reads “Clean up bars, tables and the Gulf Coast.” The proceeds from the sale (available for a $5 minimum donation) went directly to oyster shuckers laid off because of the oil spill.
