New Spirits, Apps and Websites Worth Trying

November 30, 2010 By: Jack Robertiello

Need inspiration? Kim Haasarud of Liquid Architecture has created a holiday cocktail bar app for the iPhone. The app features market-fresh holiday cocktails from the James Beard-honored mixologist, ranging from a Blackberry Rum Punch to festive Bellinis to a Salted Caramel Mocha. The app features holiday drinks in four categories: Champagne cocktails, punches, Martinis and Toddies. Each cocktail includes a picture, recipe, directions on how to batch for 12 servings, a glossary of spirits and ingredients, quick tips on garnishes and making your own ingredients. Find it here: www.liquid-architecture.com.

New York bartender and restaurateur Dushan Zaric has launched the website www.bar-solution.com, which gathers his myriad ventures in one place: development of beverage programs, cocktail menus, bar design, training, event staffing, seminars and consulting. The site also features information about Dushan’s Bar Academia and recent book, Speakeasy.

Ristretto liqueurParkers Wheated 4th Edition bourbonAs winter nears, think about these new products suited for the cold weather cocktail. Among American whiskeys, worth mentioning are Angel’s Envy, the inaugural release of master distiller Lincoln Henderson’s Port barrel-finished bourbon, unfiltered at 43.3 percent alcohol by volume with an attractive aroma of wine-soaked cherries. Also in the mix, the latest Parker’s Heritage Edition, a compelling bruiser of a 10-year-old wheated bourbon, weighing in at 62.1 percent, and this year’s Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, a spicy 47.5 percent whiskey distilled in 1993. In NYC and SF, look out for Beefeater Winter Gin, made with cinnamon and nutmeg. Most interesting: Galliano follows the relaunch of Autentico with Ristretto, made with Robusta and Arabica espresso beans and distillates of herbs and spices including vanilla, juniper berry and green anise.
