Holiday Happy Hours and Cocktails Making the Rounds

December 14, 2010 By: Jack Robertiello

Philly’s The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., begins its new happy hour program called Extra Credit, a 5-8 pm deal launching with "You Come At The King, You Best Not Miss," a drinking review of Martini evolution from the Turf Club (Old Tom Gin, Italian vermouth and Angostura Bitters) through the Martinez (Italian vermouth, Old Tom Gin, maraschino and Jerry Thomas Bitters). Future menus will include Yuletide Nogs and Tom & Jerry's, as well as Hot Drinks, Skins and Toddies.

Winter means the reopening of the Igloo Bar at the Ice Rink at Manhattan's Rockefeller Center. Chris Sjoholm oversees the menu of Igloo Ice Melters like the Fireside Gosling’s Toddy and the Alpine Açaí Cobbler (Veev Açaí Spirit, star anise, cinnamon sugar rim, hot cider, whipped cream); and cocktails including the Merry Cherry Mojito.

John Damas at Luxbar in Chicago is featuring a range of year-end drinks such as the Winter Mojito (drunken cranberries, lime wedges, fresh mint, Bacardi Solera Rum, soda water), Lux Hot Buttered Rum (Mount Gay Extra Old Rum, house-made buttered rum batter, cinnamon stick) and Holiday Cheer (PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, Grey Goose, fresh organic Michigan apple cider, dehydrated apple chip, pomegranate seeds).

Also in Chicago, Frank Chen leads his Martini Team for a holiday class at Chen’s, with a special edition class on the classic holiday cocktail. Martinis to be featured are the Christmas Martini, the Rising Suntini, the Pomegranatini, the Mint Chocolate Martini and a “Students’ Choice” Martini. Chen’s cocktail class is held bi-monthly. What’s there to look forward to? How about the Christmas Martini, made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, fresh cranberries, orange slices, fresh lemon and mint leaves.
