Stan Novack will be presented the 2011 Millennium Advisory Board Icon Award on March 7 in Las Vegas. Novack, who now operates a consulting firm, had been vice president of concept development for HMS Host Corp. and is a long-time advocate for the on-premise industry and leader on various industry initiatives. This past week, President Barack Obama signed the landmark food safety bill known as the Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act into law. The bill, backed by the National Restaurant Association and the National Council of Chain Restaurants, will give the FDA more power to monitor the complex supply chain, increase inspections of domestic and foreign food facilities, and require the FDA to draft new rules for growers and processors of high-risk fruits and vegetables.
In other legislative news, as part of the Affordable Care Act, the FDA published guidelines for chain restaurants to inform customers about the calorie counts of food. The guidelines state: Restaurants with 20 more locations must disclose the number of calories in each menu item, menus must say if additional nutritional information is available and additional written nutrition information must be available upon consumer request. For its 40th anniversary, Starbucks unveiled its new logo, a wordless symbol with a more prominent close-up of the twin-tailed mermaid. The words “Starbucks Coffee” are no longer on the logo, as the company plans to expand its brand by adding beer, wine and food offerings.
P.F. Chang’s China Bistro’s Co-chief Executive Bert Vivian will retire at the end of 2011, after 15 years with P.F. Chang’s. Rick Federico, Co-CEO and Mark Mumford, Chief Financial Officer will take over responsibilities. After Vivian retires, Federico will then take over as CEO.
Rick Karachun was named as Wine Director at A. Hardy USA. Karachun has 30 years of industry experience, and his main responsibility is developing and expanding the A. Hardy fine wine portfolio.
Diageo called for the Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau to rule on Notice 41, which allows alcohol beverage companies to provide Serving Fact Information on bottles and cans such as serving size, alcohol per serving, calories and carbohydrates.
