Celebrate National Rum Day Aug. 16

August 12, 2009 By: Nightclub & Bar

Time flies when you’re having rum, so help your patrons pass the time enjoyably on National Rum Day with some unique rum cocktails.

Any fan of diversity is a fan of rum. The category boasts numerous styles, each with a distinctive color, aroma and flavor profile and unique mixability options, not to mention its own interesting back-story. Be sure to have plenty of the spirit on hand so no one has to lament, as Captain Jack Sparrow of the Black Pearl once did, “But why is the rum gone?”

To get the party going, here are some cocktail recipes to get your patrons to step beyond the ubiquitous (although refreshing) Rum & Coke.

Pride of Barbados

1 ¼ ounces Mount Gay Extra Old Rum
½ ounce Mount Gay Eclipse Rum
1 ounce fresh grapefruit juice
¼ ounces fresh lime juice
1 ounce allspice syrup
4 drops vanilla extract
1 dash Angostura Bitters

Shake with 6 ounces of crushed ice and pour into a Chimney Glass. Garnish with orange ribbon and serve with a straw.

Bacardi Cocktail

3 parts Bacardi Gold Rum
2 parts lime juice
¼ part sugar
1 part grenadine

In a blender or shaker with ice, combine ingredients. Blend or shake and pour into glass.

Bacardi Hand-shaken Daiquiri

3 parts Bacardi Superior Rum
1 part lime or lemon juice
½ part sugar

In a blender or shaker with ice, combine ingredients. Blend or shake and pour into glass.

Original Bacardi Mojito Cocktail

1 part Bacardi Rum
3 parts club soda
12 mint leaves
½ lime
½ part Sugar

Place 12 mint leaves, ½ part sugar and ½ lime in glass. Muddle well with a pestle. Add Bacardi Rum, top off with club soda, stir well and garnish with sprigs of mint or a lime wheel.

The Bermudian

Created by Erik Johnson of L'Espalier.

2 ounces Gosling's Gold Rum
4 ounces pineapple puree
1 ounces Grand Marnier
1 or 2 sprigs of fresh muddled mint
Squeeze of fresh lime

Crush a small amount of mint in a shaker. Add ice and all ingredients, including the fresh lime, and shake. Serve straight-up and garnish with a lime twist.

Bermuda Rum Swizzle

Serves 4
4 ounces Gosling’s Black Seal Rum
4 ounces Gosling’s Gold Rum
8 ounces pineapple juice
8 ounces orange juice
¾ ounce Grenadine
6 dashes Angostura Bitters

Combine ingredients in a pitcher of crushed ice; churn vigorously until a frothing appears. Strain into ice-filled glasses.

Virgin Islands Rum Punch

1 part Cruzan Aged Light Rum
1 part Cruzan Aged Dark Rum
Dash of bitters
½ part simple syrup
½ part fresh lemon juice
2 parts orange juice
2 parts grapefruit juice

Combine ingredients and serve over ice.

Single N’ Stormy

1 part Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum
2 parts ginger beer
Squeeze of lime

Combine ingredients and serve over ice. For added complexity and flavor, “float” Cruzan Black Strap Rum on this cocktail.

The Rumosa

1 part any Cruzan Flavored Rum
Dry Champagne

Top rum with your choice of dry Champagne, and then add cut fruit like a pineapple wedge, raspberry or blueberry.

Pomegranate Paradise

2 parts Cruzan Light Rum
1 part Cruzan Black Cherry
1 part fresh sour
1 part pineapple juice
½ part DeKuyper Pomegranate

Shake all ingredients except the DeKuyper Pomegranate with ice and strain over fresh ice in a Hurricane style glass. Slowly pour the pomegranate liqueur so it flows through the cocktail. Garnish with a mint sprig and a pineapple/cherry stack on the rim.
