Be the Change in Your Community on World Food Day #WFD2013October 16, 2013 By: Mary-Kate Dunphy
In honor of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations being founded on October 16, 1945, today is World Food Day (#WFD2013). Unfortunately, hunger is a prevalent problem throughout the world and today is about being a part of the solution and taking action.
Hunger is not a matter of having enough food, there is enough food on our planet to feed its seven billion inhabitants and yet hungry mouths remain unfed. Hunger is about power – so empower someone and give another human being the luxury of a full stomach; something so many of us take for granted.
Although I do not believe this should be your main motivator to take action, doing good is great for business. If you are active in your community, customers will take notice. Fundraising for a good cause is always a respectable idea. Being that today is World Food Day you could host a canned food drive or have some of your staff volunteer at a food pantry.
Being a business owner in the hospitality industry, you have the opportunity and power to effect change in your community. The least you could do is get the word out about World Food Day, raise awareness to your customers about the importance of taking strides towards a solution regarding the battle against hunger.
