DJ Vegas Vibe’s In the Heart of the Hospitality Industry
Although he was remixing songs for friends from his dad’s
recording studio as a kid and even started toying with turntables after
buying some at a swap meet with his mom, it was not until DJ Vegas Vibe
went to his first rave club, Club Space, that he knew with certainty
what he wanted to be.
Vibe says he thought to himself, “I want to be that guy,” after
seeing that all the kids were there to see the DJ. It was then that he
began to believe the emerging popularity of disc jockeys and electronic
music would begin to overshadow live musicians at the clubs.
“DJs are the rock stars of tomorrow,” Vibe says. “There will always
be live music in places, but the trend I see is DJs are mixing their
own DVDs and each new track that comes out has its own video to go
along with it.”
Staying Grounded While Climbing Up
Born in Philadelphia as Chadd Joseph McGeehan, Vibe still keeps
close to his roots by sharing a bi-monthly residency in Philly and
Atlantic City where he spins at clubs Lounge 125 and Studio Six.
But it is his namesake city, Las Vegas, which keeps him at the heart of the entertainment industry.
Las Vegas requires a sense of conformity when it comes to spinning
at the megaclubs because nightlife is the industry there, leaving
little room for experimentation for rookies or seasoned professionals
looking for job security, Vibe says.
Vibe manages to balance that tightrope of pleasing industry
officials and club-goers with his creativity and innovations. One of
many things that distinguishes Vibe from other DJs is his attitude of
“having more fun that anyone” at the party when he’s performing. Also,
Vibe does live mash-ups, whereas most DJs have theirs pre-recorded.
Rounding out the appeal is Vibe’s infectious stage and mic presence.
Selling Yourself
Vibe’s goal is to be No. 1, and he knows it takes more than just talent. So, he has become a marketing machine.
Working with 24sevenpro, Vibe uses tactics such as e-mail and phone
number databases, text messaging, hand-to-hand advertisements and
MySpace to constantly promote himself. He aligns himself up with some
of the best DJs in the industry, spinning with Bad Boy Bill, DJ
Frankie, and DJ R.O.B.
Vibe flies to Hawaii to spin parties for R&R Entertainment. He
spins alongside DJ Zhaldee at Club Impala in San Francisco and he is
part of the DJ staff at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. Every Friday
night he can be found at Bare at the Mirage Hotel & Casino — the
one place his talent probably is overshadowed by the weekly topless
pool parties.
Vibe is fortunate that his family owns a CD duplication company; he
has been able to produce CDs at cost, enabling him to distribute
approximately 1,000 CDs a month.
While Vegas has been an ideal spot to base himself, permitting Vibe to
promote himself internationally just from people he meets on the Strip,
upcoming plans include a nightclub in Orange County, Calif., where Vibe
will be the co-owner and featured entertainer.
While Vibe never seems to be off the clock, he never feels that it
is work, thanks to the axiom his father taught him: “If you love what
you do, you will never work a day in your life.”
DJ Vegas Vibe applies that with another quote of which he’s fond:
“The poorest of all men is not the man without a cent but the man
without a dream.” NCB
