Game Day Psychology
Get Inside Your Patrons’ Heads
Football fans usually aren’t too hard to figure out. You know what they like, and it’s pretty simple.
Still, we thought we’d dig into the football fan psyche with three questions to help bar owners understand them even better.
The first question asked fans what snacks they prefer form munching
while watching games. Viewing the results, we’re almost wondering why
we bothered to ask. But that’s a good thing, for sure.
Unsurprisingly, wings took flight as the majority choice, with
chips and dip coming in a strong second. So, they love the wings, but
everybody has them.
Try to come up with a couple new flavor variations for your
football season menu to give yourself that slight edge over the bar
down the street.
When asked what they like to drink while watching a football game
in a bar, a whopping 76 percent yelled for more beer. Only 8 percent
drink cocktails, and 3 percent order wine. It might be something of a
surprise to operators that 13 percent enjoy non-alcohol beverages,
outnumbering the cocktail drinkers.
Finally, we asked exactly when football fans head for the bar for a
game. A clear 82 percent show up early to find a choice seat, get
settled and order their beloved wings and brews. Only 18 percent wait
until the game is starting. Operators should take from this the notion
that a little remodeling or improvement of your facilities could be the
difference in a patron choosing your spot as his comfort zone for
getting cozy for the game. Don’t let the newer place nearby with nicer
flat-screen TV sets win this one.
