Embracing Change
Smoking Bans Have Everyone on Edge
For some owners and operators out there, it is a worst-nightmare
looming just under the proverbial bed. And, for some, it is a painful
reality they never imagined possible just a decade ago. The legislation
for smoking bans is sweeping the country and, like all situations in
which the government ‘bans’ something, there is outcry on both sides of
the fence.
This month’s Buzztime Report is devoted to asking your patrons what
they prefer when it comes to a cigarette’s right to enter your bar. Our
findings were pretty much as we suspected –– straight down the middle.
Break
The first questions findings basically set up the groups in equal
proportions. In your bar, provided you don’t run a cigar bar, you may
find at any one time, those who consistently smoke, those who never
smoke and those who are social smokers or just don’t care. As an owner,
you must try to appease large percentages of ‘types’ of people who
frequent your bar to ensure success. If the law now prohibits smoking
in your area, your smoking clientele don’t have much of a choice.
By offering them some sort of covered outside seating or standing
space, they are more likely to choose your venue over the competition.
Thirty-one percent of those polled who smoke said that they wouldn’t
mind visiting a non-smoking bar. Get out from behind the bar and ask
your patrons. You just might find they don’t enjoy smelling like an
astray at the end of the evening either.
Ample Coverage
The second question points to the fact that these laws do little to
curb smokers from smoking in general. Thirty-four percent polled who
also smoke said that they have not cut back. A collective 28 percent
are swayed in some direction, and the remaining 38 percent are not
smokers.
Again, the only way to provide satisfaction for everyone is to
provide something for everyone. That means providing some coverage —
possibly umbrellas even for inclement weather, for smokers, and a
clean-air environment inside for non-smokers.
Once again, in a dead tie, the third question reiterates the fact
that half the population in your bar is going to be unhappy if you only
please one side. Open the window, build a patio and provide some
promotions geared towards the fact that the non-smoking ban might not
be such a bad thing.
Team with a local drycleaners to pick up and drop off clothes
during your Happy Hour for patrons in honor of the new fresh air.
Finally, 61-percent said they are not in favor of a smoking ban.
This percentage has made its voice heard with no avail over the past
few years. It is time to come to grips with the smoking bans in case
one is instated in your neighborhood or is headed your way.
Instead of weeping, embrace the possibilities. Splurge on that new
furniture, invite your older citizens out for a wine tasting and host a
family day at your restaurant –– the smoking bans are here to stay for
the time being.
